Fifth grade math is considerably more difficult with the change to the Common Core Learning Standards. Students are expected to think more critically and work through problems independently using the resources they have available to them. There is a lot more discussion as to "why" something works and not just "how" to solve the problem. I truly believe that this method of learning will be more valuable to the students in the long run, but will take a little time to adjust. Below you will find the links to the pacing guides I created and am using for the year. Take note of the standards and mathematical practices in addition to vocabulary and suggested activities for each new skill. As you will probably notice fifth grade math isn't what it used to be! The students will also be keeping a math journal, including notes, in their white binders that will be utilized daily.
